The Estonian Road Museum is a new and unique museum collection, "studying and exposing to the public various materials on the history of Estonian roads. The museum was opened in June 2005 and it is located in the historic post station complex of Varbuse. The complex, protected as an architectural landmark, is made up of five buildings: the post station main building, stable, coach house, sauna-laundry-smithy and the dwelling of postboys-saddlemakers.
The permanent exposition, called “Make History!” and completed in 2005, is displayed in the main building and the stable. It invites you on a tour on different roads from the prehistoric times to this day. Travelling in mail coach, you can listen to old travelogues. A ride on a road grader introduces the profession of a grader-driver. In addition to numerous photos, pictures and fascinating texts, the exhibition is enlivened by chronicles and live memories from different eras. In addition to the old post station complex, there is also a large machine hall belonging to the museum, where different road-building and maintenance equipment from the 20th century has been exposed. The museum is located in scenic surroundings with the untouched Tilleorg and its 5 kms long walking path only some two-hundred meters away. The museum is approachable on an old post road, having maintained its former narrow and crooked line. ” (Estonian Museums)

On the first floor of the main building there is an exhibition that introduces the development of roads and ways of movement until the occupation of the Republic of Estonia in 1940. Here each visitor can see how the road work developed in Estonia and look at old road maps, sit in a stage-coach and listen to old travelogues, watch documentary scenes about road construction and management during the first Republic of Estonia and many other interesting things.

In the stable the exhibition focuses on the period from 1944 until today as the most intensive road construction and road using era in Estonia throughout times. From this exhibition visitors will get an overview of the destruction that took place during WW II and the massive road construction works after the war. This permanent exhibition offers answers to several questions concerning road construction: what is the difference between asphalt concrete and black road surface, which is the longest bridge in Estonia and many other interesting things. The visitors have a chance to try out the job of a grader driver and sit on the seats of cars that are produced in the Soviet Union. All this is supplemented by videos about the era.

The exhibition of road construction machines in the machine hall is a real treat for those interested in technology. Here are many different road construction machines from the 20th century. For example, there is a self-propelled Caterpillar grader manufactured according to a license in Ilmarise factory in Tallinn at the end of 1930s. How many people know that the first self-propelled grader in the Soviet Union was designed by Estonian engineer Volberg and this laid the foundation for Estonian SSR grader industry in Paide? The end of 1950s and the beginning of 1960s were the most productive times for the grader industry in Paide. One by one graders V-10 and D-512 went to production. These most famous representatives of national grader industry have also been included in the exhibition of the museum.

In the machine hall there is also a representative of national car industry - ET-600, also known as "codfish head" among the public. This plastic car, designed by Roman Bertelov, never went to series manufacture, though it was very close to this. We recommend visitors take some time off at the "codfish head" for a second - for a little while at least the idea of Estonian own car industry will become a reality.
