Zlatan Vehabović - Dark White Land

Von/from: 20.07.2018  Bis/until: 02.09.2018

In October 2016, Zlatan Vehabović, one of the very best contemporary Croatian painters of the younger generation, took part in a yachting expedition the route of which extended into the last unfrozen region of the polar Arctic Sea off the coast of Svalbard Island.
The five weeks of intense activity during their stay included sailing, regular disembarkations on the uninhabited coastal area of the vast archipelago, active hiking and touring the inhabited and abandoned dwelling places and small towns of the region. The whole experience was documented photographically.
The role of the material recorded came to the fore on the artist’s return to the studio in Zagreb. With meticulous revision, the artist divided the recorded material into four groups of subjects, imposed partially by the very nature of the clime and partially by specific personal interests: the expedition, the landscape, the history and politics of the region and the ecological dimension of the artist’s experience of this extreme region.
Via collaging and the superimposition of different parts of the documentation recorded, 30 prototypes were created that served for the composition of the paintings that will be exhibited as the final product of this project. The final selection came down to 19 pictures, and the current working title of the show is Dark White Land.
The exhibition is curated and the catalogue essay written by Branko Franceschi.

Benno Berneis - Dunkle Sehnsüchte, romantisches Talent

Von/from: 21.07.2018  Bis/until: 26.08.2018

Vlaho Bukovac and his Parisian Teacher Alexander Cabanel

Von/from: 25.09.2018  Bis/until: 06.01.2019

Date: September 25, 2018 – January 6, 2019

The Art Pavilion in Zagreb is in 2018 celebrating the 120th anniversary of its founding. This is a big anniversary that we intend to mark with all due dignity. Although we shall be dedicating the whole of 2018 to this anniversary and shall celebrate it in various programmes throughout the year, one exhibition is nevertheless going to have pride of place. This an exhibition devoted to the most celebrated Croatian painter, Vlaho Bukovac, and his Parisian teacher, Alexander Cabanel.
Vlaho Bukovac was the initiator of the founding of the Art Pavilion in Zagreb and hence an exhibition of his works is an intelligible choice and indeed a must for the celebration of this great anniversary year. For similar reasons, it is our wish to exhibit, alongside Bukovac’s, the works of his teacher in Paris, Alexander Cabanel. It is a well-known fact that in Paris Bukovac met the then exceptionally distinguished and much appreciated painter and professor at the École des Beaux-Arts and wanted to enrol in his class and study painting with him. But Cabanel could not admit him because the class was already full. Bukovac then came to an agreement with Cabanel that within a given time he would paint some work, and if Cabanel liked it, he would let him join the class. For this task he painted the painting Hand, which so delighted Cabanel he let him into the École des Beaux-Arts. The famed French painter had a major and important role in Bukovac’s artistic training, and the exhibition in the Art Pavilion will for the first time bring together the pupil and the teacher and give the public, the art history discipline and the media a clear picture of how much the teacher affected the pupil. We think that the organisation of this exhibition is a great and really crucial event for Zagreb and the whole of Croatia. The exhibition will cover masterpieces of Vlaho Bukovac borrowed from Croatian and foreign museums and private collections. But the exhibition will also, in the original concept of one of the most highly reputed Croatian art historians, Igor Zidić, cover the time when the Pavilion came into being – through cultural, social, sociological and political discourse. Loans of paintings by Cabanel have already been agreed on with several French museums, including the most important, the Petit Palais in Paris and the Musée Fabre in Montpellier. We also expect a major loan from the Hermitage in St Petersburg.

Igor Zidić is the creator of the exhibition, selector of the works and writer of the catalogue essay.
